“World Glaucoma Awareness Week”
The glaucomas cause progressive damage to the vision; they do so without warning till later in the disease process and while treatment is effective in arresting the disease, it cannot reverse damage already present.
The earlier the diagnosis, the less damage done and the more vision there is to save.
Who is at risk?
- age over 40 years of age
- glaucoma in the family -- First Degree Relatives have a ten-fold increase in life-long glaucoma risk.
- those with diabetes/ thyroid disease / hypertension
- have received steroid containing preparations : tablets/ drops/ ointments/ puffs/ injections
- see rainbow coloured rings around bright light
- taking medication for sleep/ anxiety / depression / asthma
- have had an injury to the face /eye
- myopia (short sight)
- Have headaches.
So Get tested for Glaucoma and participate in the below events.
This year the “World Glaucoma Week” is to be observed from March 11th to 17th, 2018.
The list of activities that the Department of Ophthalmology has organized for this year:
- Glaucoma screening in the Eye OPD from 9am to 4pm from March 12th (Monday) to 17th (Saturday)
- Walk for Glaucoma awareness on 11th March 2018 at 8.00 am from Gandhi statue. This event organized by Pondicherry ophthalmologists’ Association would be flagged off by Dr S C Parija the Director, JIPMER, Dr Ashok Shankar Badhe, MS, JIPMER and Dr Mohankumar, MS, IGGGH&PGI.
- Painting competition on the theme “Beat Invisible Glaucoma” for all Health Care Workers (faculty and other staff) including students. This will be held on 10th March 2018 in Dr Abdul Kalam Auditorium at 2 pm.
- JIPMER Health Initiative programme- “Save your sight-Know Glaucoma” on 13th of March 2018 at 2.30pmin SSB Auditorium.
- Glaucoma CME on “The Importance of 24-Hour IOP Control and
the Impact of Diurnal Fluctuations in the Management of Glaucoma” on March 14th, at 3.30pm, Seminar room of Ophthalmology Dept. by Dr Subashini K
