JIPMER, being a teaching and research institution with many faculty, post-graduates and PhD scholars performing research on animals, the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) has been constituted to oversee and evaluate all aspects of the institution’s animal care and use program. The IAEC provides assurance for humane procedures and care of live vertebrate animals in teaching and research as detailed in the Rule 13 of the “Breeding of and experiments on Animals (Control and Supervision) Rules 1998”. Before research involving animal usage can be undertaken, the project will have to be reviewed and approved by the IAEC.
JIPMER IAEC has been registered with Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA) with Reg No: 2248/GO/Re/S/23/CCSEA.
The functions of the JIPMER Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) are as follows:
- Review and approve proposals using small animals in research which conform to the various guidelines for use of animals in research
- Monitor and review the research throughout the study
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, applicable rules, guidelines and laws of animal experimentation.
