A new era for research has begun after JIPMER was declared as an Institution of National Importance (an autonomous body) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in 2008.

The previous structure has been redesigned for rapid turnaround and critical review of research projects. An exclusive division for research headed by Dean (Research) has been formed along with various committees that support and facilitate good research practices. The funds allocated for research has been increased considerably. As research is the key to excellence in academic medicine, JIPMER inculcates the attitude of inquiry, acquisition of knowledge and the conduct of research in faculty and students. The office of the Dean ( Research) is striving to focus on applied research, development and training across all disciplines of the JIPMER and complements existing JIPMER strengths in basic research and outreach.
