Curriculum Vitae in Brief- HPB
Dr. Biju Pottakkat did MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology from SGPGIMS, Lucknow. Later he obtained Post-Doctoral Fellowship (PDF) in HPB surgery. He underwent further training in the division of liver surgery at Kurume University School of Medicine, Fukuoka, Japan under Dr. K Okuda. He was a visiting fellow in the Department of HPB surgery at Washington University under Dr. Steven M Strasberg. He completed training in Liver Transplant Surgery at Asian Centre for Liver disease and Transplantation at Singapore under Late. Dr. KC Tan. He was working as a faculty in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at SGPGIMS, Lucknow before joining JIPMER, Puducherry.
Scholarships and awards obtained by him included United European Gastroenterology Federation Scholarship, Scholarship of the International College of Surgeons, Young Investigator Award of Korean Society of Gastroenterology, travel awards from the Japanese Surgical Society, European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (EAES), American Society of Transplantation, Indian society of Gastroenterology, Indian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of science and technology (DST), etc.
Dr. Biju Pottakkat has served as Associate Dean Research JIPMER. He is instrumental in establishing a liver transplant program at JIPMER. He has initiated academic and research programs in HPB- clinical post-doctoral fellowship as well as research post Ph.D. post-doctoral fellowship in JIPMER. He was a member of the curriculum committee for MCh and PDF courses and is a member of research monitoring committees.
He has served/serving as an office-bearer/member of the national executive committees of professional associations including IHPBA, IASG, AMASI, Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IAPEN), and Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research (ISAR), and the state chapter of ASI. He was involved in drafting guidelines and constitutions of professional societies.
He was organizing chairman of four national conferences, organizing secretary of 42 national/ regional conferences, and chairman of the scientific committee for seven national/regional conferences.
He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Nutrition Research (JNR) and reviewer in several journals. He has published 104 scientific papers in indexed journals and authored five textbook chapters. He had 262 invited presentations in various international and national conferences in the area of HPB Surgery. He is a Ph.D. guide to five trainees in liver research. He has guided 12 MCh trainees and three Post-Doctoral HPB Surgery fellows. He was part of 34 research projects in HPB areas and 14 are ongoing. He has received seven research grants funding totaling more than 1.5 crores for basic research in liver diseases from agencies including the Department of Science and Technology, Scientific and Engineering Research Board (SERB), UGC, etc. He is the chairman and coordinator for JIPMER-Leeds UK emerging center collaboration, a funded initiative by the international liver transplant society (ILTS). He has served as an expert in the patient safety framework committee and transplant committee of the national health authority of the Government of India. He is an expert member of the state organ and tissue transplant organization (SOTTO) of the state of Puducherry.
