• To educate and train the students in the discipline of Microbiology
• To collaborate with other specialties including basic/clinical sciences and other technical institutes in the region and with other institutes of national importance.

The department is collaborated with microbiology laboratory (Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme lab) in GH, karaikal for reporting the culture and serology. Previously, IDSP lab was doing only serology reporting, JIPMER karaikal has initiated the bacteriology culture reporting, operation theatre surveillance, water analysis in dialysis unit.

Academic

The department of microbiology is mainly involved in UG teaching/training and is following the integrated MBBS curriculum which was introduced in the year 2016. The primary aim of the department is to provide the strong basic knowledge both in theory and practical to the graduating students. Different teaching learning methods such as integrated teaching with other departments, small group discussions, self-directed learning, student-centered learning,case-based learning are employed for students in active learning. During Practical session,problem-based learning, peyton’s method of teaching,hands on training in the clinical sample processing are regularly conducted. The students are encouraged to participate in many activities such as quiz program, seminars, model making etc. Every year students are applying for STS projects and so far three projects were approved by ICMR.

Academic and research discussions (Journal club meetings) are regularly conducted among the faculty and residents focusing on professional and research development.
