The Department of Medicine was started in February 2020 at JIPMER Karaikal. The department will cater to the needs of the patients of Karaikal and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu by running regular OPD services, wards for in patients and ICU services for the critically ill patients once the hospital is established. The department is planned to have 120 general ward beds and 12 ICU beds. Being the core clinical subject for undergraduate MBBS students, the department will strive to build the fundamental basics of medical science so as to produce better doctors in future. The department foresees to be the referral centre for common and uncommon communicable and noncommunicable diseases with the standard of care facilities. Dr. Kalaimani, Assistant Professor of Medicine is the Officer in charge of the department at present.

Academic

• The Department of Medicine is currently involved in undergraduate training program for MBBS students. Students are taught the basics of clinical medicine as well as establishing a good doctor patient relationship which is critical to progress in future. Bedside clinical teaching of common diseases and their approach are incorporated. Theory classes are conducted regularly to keep students uptodate about the current trends in medicine.
• The department plans to conduct regular academic workshops and conferences for undergraduate students as well as CME programmes for the faculties of JIPMER.
