General Information
JIPMER was declared as an “Institution of National Importance” by an Act of Parliament, JIPMER, Puducherry, Act, 2008. The Institution is now empowered to award Medical Degrees under the clauses 23 & 24 of the Act. Such Degrees shall be deemed to be included in the schedules to the respective Acts governing Medical Council of India/National Medical Commission, Indian Nursing Council, and Dental Council of India, entitling the holders to the same privileges as those attached to the equivalent awards from the recognised Universities of India.
JIPMER imparts Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and Super Specialty Medical
Training through a large hospital complex (JIPMER Hospital) and a Nursing College. Some
of the courses offered are MBBS., BSc, MSc., MD, MS, MDS, DM, MCh, and PhD courses.
JIPMER has consistently ranked in the top 10 under Medical Category of All India NIRF ranking framework and ranked 4th in the year 2025.

Location:
The Office of the Dean (Academic), Academic and Examination sections are located on the third floor of JIPMER Academic Centre.

Activities undertaken by Academic section:
- Holding Entrance Examinations and counselling for select courses; taking part in the INI-CET and INI-SS examination and counselling process on behalf of the institute.
- Admitting students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses after due process
- Facilitating provision of student-related facilities
- Managing academic activities of various courses, including timetable, internal assessment tests, dissertation evaluation, deciding eligibility to appear in professional examinations, disciplinary actions, etc.
- Processing of student applications including leave applications, scholarships, etc.
- Procedures at the time of course completion or resignation
- Conduct of Convocation
- Verification of certificates of former students on request from external agencies
- Maintaining correspondences between various offices/sections of the institute, and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, other Ministries & its agencies.
- Receive and process applications for training and observership from other organisations
- Oversee the functioning of the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Medical Education, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, and Physical Education
- Oversee the functioning of hostels
Activities undertaken by Examination section:
- Preparatory work leading to Exit/Professional Examinations: Theory and Practical Examination timetable preparation, Question paper setting and vetting, appointment of examiners, managing the itinerary of examiners, Exam fee collection, and hall ticket generation
- Conduct of Exit/Professional Examinations: Preparation of examination halls, seating charts, invigilation, collection of answer scripts, and disciplinary action.
- Post-examination work: Scanning and assignment of answer scripts for evaluation, Compiling scores, verification, and publishing of results, issuing of certificates including mark statements and provisional pass certificate.
- Administrative work: Procurement of answer scripts, Secure storage and secure disposal of answer scripts, processing of remuneration/TA/DA/accommodation/food bills, etc.
