Bone marrow transplantation
JIPMER is the first centre in Pondicherry to start bone marrow transplant or hematopoietic stem cell transplant. It is the only centre in the government sector to provide this service in Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu. First autologous stem cell transplant was successfully performed in February 2013 for a patient with relapsed non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Allogeneic transplant was first performed from a matched sibling syngeneic donor in April 2014 for a patient with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The transplant procedure allows cancer patients to receive aggressive, high-dose chemotherapy / radiotherapy, since the transplanted cells are able to rebuild the patient's bone marrow following treatment. Currently BMT facility is a 2 bedded unit run by a dedicated team with multidisciplinary coordination.
