Department of Preventive and Social Medicine has been training undergraduates from the inception of JIPMER and postgraduates from 1979. Undergraduate training includes medical and paramedical disciplines like laboratory sciences and medical records. Several hundreds of quality research publications and over 50 postgraduate dissertations have been completed. The department has also completed several internationally funded research projects on Maternal Health by Ford Foundation and ‘Model Geriatric Care’ by WHO. The department has well organized Urban and Rural Health Centres, visited by stalwarts like Professor John M Last. These centres have well established and documented family folder system of medical records which facilitates family centered teaching, training and follow up health care services. The department has put up a proposal for a full fledged JIPMER School of Public Health which has been cleared by the Institute Body.
