The core values of the department are focused on providing holistic care to the older adults and to enhance the healthcare experience of the patients and their families. The practice of evidence-based medicine, advanced research, capacity building, and advocacy for older patients form the pillars of this department.

The Geriatric clinic was started as a weekly clinic on Friday afternoon in the Medicine OPD under the leadership of Dr. D.K.S. Subrahmanyam, Professor of Medicine. He was also the first officer In-charge of the Dept of Geriatric Medicine till his superannuation in 2025. He worked closely for the creation of separate Geriatric block (in Screening OPD block) as guided by the Ministry and the Institute, which was completed in 2018. Dr Mukta Wyawahare, Professor of Medicine, is the Officer In-charge from June 2025. Dr Venugopalan G is working  as Associate Professor in the department. The department provides daily OPD services in Screening OPD Ground floor since 2021.

The daily OPD caters to older adults 70 years and above. The older patients from other services, requiring geriatric assessment are also seen in this OPD. Along with the holistic medical care, the specialty services like cognitive assessment & management, frailty assessment & management, fall assessment & management, vaccination guidance for older adults, and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) are provided in the OPD. The OPD also houses a sarcopenia lab.

The Dept of Geriatric Medicine has a Senior citizen help desk, which is operated by a NGO, Help Age India. The social service officer (Medical Social Worker) and the help desk offer support and guidance to the older adults with history of abuse, neglect by family members, and those with shelter needs. The older adults with disability are also assessed, and aids are provided through government schemes like Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana.

Starting of In-patient services and establishing mobility lab are in process.
