Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) was started in the year 1956, was upgraded in 1964 as a Regional Postgraduate Centre and it was declared as an Institution of National Importance in 2008 through an Act of Parliament. It was affiliated to University of Madras initially and later to Pondicherry University. From July 2008 the Institute has become an autonomous institute.

JIPMER Karaikal was inaugurated in the year 2016. Currently JIPMER Karaikal has 21 academic departments which imparts Undergraduate (UG) training through a working hospital (Karaikal General Hospital) with a bed strength of 500. JIPMER ensures that teaching methods employed, facilities and content of the programmes are in line with the latest innovations with a strong science base.
