General Info

The department of Surgery is one of the core clinical departments of the hospital and has functioned since the inception of JIPMER. The department at present has 17 faculty members, 12 senior residents and 29 postgraduates. The Department has six units which provide out-patient services, elective and emergency surgical services and diagnostic services.

Patient care services include General Surgical OPD on six days of the week, a comprehensive breast care clinic on every monday and a multidisciplinary cancer care and follow up clinic on every Thursday. An average of 150 patients are seen per day in the OPD and about 20 admissions are made in the emergency hours. Annually about 2500 major and 6000 minor surgical procedures are performed. The range of surgical services provided by the department include cancer surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, breast and endocrine surgery and minimally invasive surgery, in addition to taking care of patients with chronic wounds. Trauma and non-trauma emergencies are also managed by the department. The Department has a dedicated Endoscopy program where diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopies are performed on all working days.


The Department lays ample stress on research and all residents work on projects under the guidance of the faculty. It has a number of publications in International and National medical journals and textbooks. More than 50 publications from the department have appeared in indexed journals over the last five years.


Bed strength: 4 general wards with a total of 154 beds including ICU beds.
