JIPMER
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research

General Info

The Department of Physiology is among the premier departments in JIPMER, started with the inception of the institute. The Physiology department is providing medical education and training to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, and also to the students of various paramedical courses. Also, the department is involved in clinical investigations on electrophysiological diagnostic procedures, pulmonary functions tests and autonomic function tests for hospital patients. The unique feature of the physiology department is that the electrophysiology laboratory is providing hospital services in patient management for more than thirty years. Also, research activities are conducted vigorously in various laboratories of the department. Department has a state of the art animal research laboratory. The yoga research, therapy and training are important routine features of the department. The Advanced Center for Yoga Therapy, Training, Education and Research (ACYTER) of JIPMER is under the Department of Physiology. The Department of Physiology has conducted many national conferences, CMEs and workshops in Physiology and Yoga.

At the outset, the Physiology department of JIPMER has three unique domains. They are academics, research and patient care. The academic aspect is that every year it imbibes  around 4 MD students and 2 Ph D scholars with the training of 150 MBBS students, 75 Nursing students, 50 BSc (MLT & Allied Medical) students , 15 MSc (Medical Biochemistry & Physiology) students every year in addition to imparting short term physiology courses for 50 paramedical students. Students are actively encouraged to do short term students research projects funded by ICMR, KVPY, DST and other funding agencies which enables them to have research publications and makes them eligible for future international and national research and other academic opportunities. Its in-fact the very important objective of institutes of national importance is to generate expertise equipped well in research, advance academics and skills, directive abilities who will act as reliable referral facility in addition to their routine knowledge that their degree imparts.

The Research dimension is that the department takes 4 MD  students and 2 Ph D Scholars every year. The present postgraduate strength is that there are 12 MD students, 5 Ph D scholars. All are actively involved in research carried out in well equipped laboratories of the department. The laboratories include Electrophysiology laboratory, Autonomic function testing laboratory, Pulmonary function testing laboratory, Exercise physiology laboratory, Animal research laboratory, Molecular physiology laboratory, Obesity research laboratory and Neurophysiology research laboratory. The busy laboratories devote morning 9.00 am to 4.30pm for research and academics and devote to patient care from 9.30 am onwards. Academics are given precedence to research and patient care. Post graduates are well trained in all the laboratories before they complete their residency. In addition the department conducts a lot of screening camp as currently many research projects are undertaken in life style related disorders which benefit the general public.

The department takes responsibility in the patient care domain of the Institute also. All the research laboratories are dedicated to prompt patient care and these facilities are seldom available in routine health facility. The department takes pride in harbouring unique expertise in these technically demanding investigations for the past four decades. Nerve conduction studies, Auditory & Visual evoked potentials, Somatosensory evoked potentials, Repetitive nerve stimulation studies, H & F reflex studies, Electromyography, Autonomic function testing, Tilt table studies, Phonocardiogram studies, Pulmonary function testing are few of the routine investigations done on patients. Pulmonary diffusion capacity studies and exercise studies are currently under research domain which are in the runway for expansion into patient care.

The department has one professor, two additional professors, three assistant professors and five senior residents. All are actively involved in academics, research and patient care. No time bound promotions are given and all promotions are strictly based on evaluation programmes centered on research publications and academic activities. All faculty are guides and supervisors to MD and Ph D scholars of the department and co-guides to the other departments of the institute. In addition to guiding students all faculty pursue their own research projects funded by intra and extramural fundings.
