Departmental Administration

Since the inception of JIPMER hospital in 1964, Puducherry; for almost 22 years Radiodiagnosis and Radiotherapy services were provided under single roof i.e Department of Radiology.  But in consonance with the recommendations made by the Medical Council of India to recognize Post-Graduate programmes, the Department of Radiology was bifurcated into the Departments of Radio-Diagnosis and Radiotherapy in 1986. The department of radiotherapy has been functioning independently since then in JIPMER.

The department of Radiotherapy was also granted Regional Cancer Centre status by the Ministry in 2002. The department has been treating nearly 3500 cancer patients annually.  Daily, more than 180-200 patients receive radiation and chemotherapy.  Most of these patients are treated on an outpatient basis.  In the year 2008, Upgradation of Regional Cancer Centre with a separate block having capacity of 82 inpatient beds (including ICU, 20 special ward beds), outpatient facilities, day care centre, minor operation theatre etc. Department of Medical Oncology also started functioning in new Regional cancer centre in collaboration with radiotherapy department to provide efficient services to cancer patients under one roof.

Government of India has given permission to start MD course in Radiotherapy since 2009 with annual intake of 6 students. At Regional Cancer Centre, hi-tech therapy equipments like High-energy Linear Accelerator with IMRT/IGRT Treatment facility, new HDR Brachy Therapy, CT Simulator, Treatment Planning System etc. to accommodate the increase in load of cancer patients treated and to impart quality training program to PG students in Radiation therapy & Medical Physics are available.
