In-Patient Services

The Department of Pediatrics located in the JIPMER Women & Children Hospital (JWCH)  has a total  bed strength of 227 which includes the general wards, private wards, emergency and the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units.

EMERGENCY

The A& E located on the ground floor is a 24 bedded unit which provides round the clock  emergency services. Sick patients who come to the OPD in the morning, those who arrive after OPD hours and on holidays are seen here.  The A&E consists of a Triage room, Zero delay ward, the A&E ward and the High Dependency Unit (HDU) level I for patients who require close monitoring and yet are not sick enough to be transferred to the intensive care unit.

Two emergency teams do duty on shift basis. Each team comprises of one  senior resident, two to three junior residents, interns, nursing staff and an on-call consultant.The emergency is fully equipped to handle all kinds of emergencies. There are facilities for oxygen therapy, radiant warmers for newborn temperature maintenance, multiparameter  monitors, pediatric ventilators and facilities for conducting minor procedures. The residents are well versed in handling all pediatric emergency situations, as they deal with a wide range of conditions everyday like shock, respiratory distress, diabetic ketoacidosis, congestive cardiac failure, poisonings etc. Investigations like blood investigations, bed- side X rays, ECG, ultrasonography etc are available 24 hours.

PEDIATRIC WARDS

On the first and the third floors of the Women and Children Hospital there are pediatric wards. Duty residents and nursing staff are posted 24 hours in these wards. There are separate procedure rooms for conducting procedures like i.v. cannulation, lumbar puncture etc. Multiparameter monitors are available bedside. A side lab is attached for basic investigations. Facilities for bedside ECG and X-ray are available round the clock.

PEDIATRIC ENDOSCOPY ROOM

The GI endoscopy room is located adjacent to the ward. Endoscopy services are available for in-patients but is predominantly conducted as day care procedure under sedation to ensure patient comfort and early return to daily activities. Diagnostic endoscopies are done for biopsies and corrosive ingestions. Therapeutic procedures like variceal ligation, sclerotherapy, stricture dilatation, foreign body removal, polypectomy and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy are performed.

PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is located in the first floor of WCH. It is a 19 bedded facility with state of the art monitoring facilities catering primarily to children with life threatening medical problems. The main PICU (HDU-III) area has 11 beds with full-fledged monitoring and assisted ventilation facility. Children on advanced life support are managed in HDU-III and once they no longer require assisted ventilation and advanced life support measures, they are cared for in the HDU-II facility which has 6 beds. In addition PICU has 2 isolation beds to cater for critically ill children who require complete isolation and an additional 2 bedded private ward . In house facility for hemodialysis ensures that children with acute kidney injury (AKI) can receive renal replacement at their bedside.

NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE

Ours is a level III NICU. The total bed strength is 60.The Kangaroo mother Care ward is a 13 bedded ward meant exclusively for kangaroo mother care. Our NICU is equipped with all facilities for level III care- ventilators, multiparametric monitors, bubble CPAP machines, ABG machine etc. For more information on the functioning of NICU you may log onto” Neonatology Division”.

Out-Patient Services

DAILY OPD SERVICES

The Pediatric OPD located on the ground floor of the Women and Children Hospital functions six days a week from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

CHILD GUIDANCE OPD
Parallel to the general OPD runs the Child guidance OPD, six days a week. Patients attending the OPD are seen by the resident and given appointment for detailed assessment in the Child Guidance Forum.

SIDE LAB FACILITY
The OPD has a side lab for rapid reporting of basic investigations like hemogram, urine routine etc.

PROCEDURE ROOM
The OPD has a procedure room for taking blood samples for investigations .

INFORMATION ABOUT SPECIAL CLINICS

ENDOCRINOLOGY CLINIC

The Pediatric endocrinology clinic is held every Monday afternoon  in coordination with Department of Endocrinology with a view to streamline the management of children with endocrine problems especially diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism.

GENETICS CLINIC

Patients with genetic disorders, new and those on follow up are seen here. Patients referred from other departments for genetic consultation are also seen. Old and new patients are enrolled in Down syndrome registry and followed up.

GENETIC COUNSELLING CLINIC

Patients seen in the genetics clinic are called by appointment for genetic counseling.

GASTROENTEROLOGY CLINIC

The Pediatric Gastroenterology clinic deals with the follow up of a wide range of pediatric hepatobiliary, pancreatic and luminal conditions. Endoscopy services are available as day care procedures.

WELL BABY CLINIC/UNDER FIVE CLINIC

NICU graduates as well as babies with uneventful perinatal  period  are followed up in the well baby /under five clinic. Immunization as per the Universal Immunization Program is followed.  Growth monitoring, treatment of medical problems and parental counseling is done on a case to case basis.

CHILD GUIDANCE FORUM

The Child Guidance Forum is held by the Dept of Pediatrics together with the Dept of Psychiatry. Cases of child psychiatry who attend  the Child Guidance  OPD are seen here by prior appointment. A detailed analysis of each case is done with formulation of treatment and follow up plan.

PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY

The Pediatric Nephrology clinic manages a large number of children with renal diseases such as nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, tubulopathies, renal malformations, recurrent urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux and chronic renal failure.

CARDIOLOGY CLINIC

Cases of congenital and acquired heart diseases are followed up here. Patients requiring surgical management are referred to CTVS.

TUBERCULOSIS CLINIC

The TB clinic caters to a large number of cases of pediatric TB- pulmonary and extrapulmonary. Apart from continuation of anti-tuberculous medication, assessing response to therapy and side-effects of the drugs, screening of family members is also done.

CHILD GUIDANCE CLINIC

Cases seen in the Child Guidance  OPD are followed up in the Child Guidance Clinic. Children with ADHD, autism, mental retardation etc are seen.

NEUROLOGY CLINIC

The neurology clinic attends to a large number of children with  neurological disorders on long term follow up.  Cases of seizure disorder, global developmental delay/mental retardation, cerebral palsy, post encephalitic or post TB  meningitic sequelae etc are seen. Facility for EEG and anti-epileptic drug levels are available with the Dept of Neurology and the Dept of  Pharmacology respectively.

PEDIATRIC INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND COUNSELING CLINIC ( HIV)

The Department of Pediatrics runs a PIEC (Pediatric Information, Education and Counseling) clinic which is part of the Link ART Centre at JIPMER. The HIV positive children are registered for antiretroviral therapy (ART) at the Link ART centre in JIPMER. In addition, the HIV- exposed infants are registered and under follow up. They are managed as per NACO guidelines.  Facilities for HIV DNA PCR, HIV ELISA and CD4 count testing are available in the Department of Microbiology.

HIGH RISK CLINIC

The high risk clinic running three days a week is for the follow up of babies who are at high risk for adverse neurodevelopmental  outcome. The services are offered to both inborn babies discharged from our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and also to outborn babies who are identified as high risk in the well baby clinic. The visit to the high risk clinic is by prior appointment which is given at the time of discharge or at the visit to the well baby clinic. Assessment of growth, neurological examination, hearing assessment and development assessment are done. Neuroimaging, referral for ophthalmology/ ENT assessment, occupational therapy and speech therapy are done as required.
