Department has a 6-bedded acute stroke care/ neurointensive care unit with laptop based digital EEG,ENMG, TCD and 6 ventilators, a 16 bedded intermediary care ward and 4-pecial ward beds considerably augmenting its patient care services. There is a Carotid Colour Duplex scanner, a Transcranial doppler, Two video-EEG monitoring units, One EEG machine, Two ENMG-EP machines, two Deep freezers, a refrigerator and a centrifuge for handling and storing biological fluid specimen, a functional clinical trial unit, a functional neurorehabilitation facility, neurobionic facilities like FES,computerised cognitive battery and a tilt table system. Free plasma exchange and IV methyl prednisolone and Immunoglobulin therapy for acute neuroimmunological diseases; antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral therapy for CNS infections;and IV tPA thrombolysis therapy, hemicraniectomy and intraarterial thrombolysis for acute ischemic strokes with prompt laboratory supports including neuroimaging, neurochemistry and neurophysiologic studies and access to internet in all wards makes our service efficient and unique.
Thursday Stroke Clinic: The stroke and TIA clinic led by a trained stroke neurologist augumented its follow-up services by the services rendered by a clinical stroke trial co-ordinator and the neurobiology technician, neurophysiotherapy trainees and social science trainees. This is one-stop state of the art facility for investigations of transient ischemic strokes and completed strokes. The clinic provides TCD and carotid and vertebral colour duplex studies and gives direct access to CT, MRI, angiography, SPECT and biological studies for all patients with indications. Stroke genetic services and thrombophila work up is also available. The clinic sees upto 25 new and 50 follow-up patients a week.
Tuesday Neurodegenerative and Demyelinating Clinic: Tuesday specialty clinic offers spcial care of Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Heridofamilial diseases, Parksinsonism and Dementias. Disease modifying therapies for CNS inflammatory diseases such as Beta interferon, Glatiramer Acetate, Rituximab; for Moto Neuro disease Riluzole and for Dystonias, Injection botulinum toxin are given through Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi. Disease registries are maintained and patients have opportunities to enrol themselves into various clinical trials where current therapeutic options are limited. Movement disorders and sleep disorders are also seen on the same day.
Wednesday: General Neurology Clinics: With an average of 600 per/ week Neurology patients including over 250 Epilepsy, 100 headache, and over 5o stroke, 50 parkinsonism and other extrapyramidal disorders, Neurology has one of the busiest OPDs of JIPMER with tertiary level care and offer of free drugs for all common conditions.
Medical Social worker: Patients receive the support of a medical social worker on all days at the outpatient clinic such as advice on RAN, TNSHIS, Poor patient fund,disability certificate and other social support schemes.
Neurophysiotherapist: Dedicated neurophysiotherapy advice and care is given at OPD on all Tuesdays (Neuridegenerative clinic) and Thursdays(Stroke Clinic)
Laboratory services: Include carotid and transcranial doppler, EEG, ENMG, EP,computerised cognitive testing, Titlt table and autonomic nervous system testing and limited neurometabolic and neurogenetic tests.
