MEDICO SOCIAL SERVICES WING

BACK GROUND INFORMATION:

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research originated as Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry established by the French Government in the year 1823.

This Medical Collage was later upgraded into Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)

JIPMER which includes a tertiary care referral hospital is an Institution of National Importance (an autonomous body) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Three main functions of this institute are:

  • To impart quality education in Under-graduate and Post –graduate medical and paramedical  
  • To set trends in medical research.
  • To offer patient care of high order.
  • To organize Health Education initiative

                Objective of the Department:

  • To deal with the patient’s Social and Psychological  factors associated  with cause, course and consequence of the illness;
  • To contribute to the optimum rehabilitation (physical, medical and social ) of the patients and facilitate their reintegration into society;
  • To strive for the promotion of health awareness among the patients their families and in the community;
  • To enable patients make the best use of the medical/rehabilitation services available in JIPMER and to help them secure maximum effectiveness of medical care.

Working pattern of the department and Services offered:

  • All the Medical social workers reports to duty by 9:00 am at Medico Social Services Wing and reports to Social Service officer.
  • Later MSWs report to their respective department  and carry out their work in the OPD & Ward.
  • MSWs reports to Medico Social Services Wing by 2:00pm and attend to special clinics and wards according in their department needs.
  • Social Service officer arranges the internal posting; leave adjustments, additional duties with approval of Faculty in- charge.
  • Supervising Medical Social worker supervises and monitor the work of MSWs. A compiled monthly report of each MSWs  is  presented and discussed in the department monthly meeting chaired   by Faculty in- charge.
  • All centralized services like bus concession, train concession, treatment certificate, disability certificate, Poor Patient fund , Rashtriya Arokya  Nidhi etc., are   processed through the department for effective results.
  • All the MSW’s are involved  in common  JIPMER    programmes like JIPMER HEALTH EDUCATION INITIATIVE. Important days of Health significance are observed by conducting various outreach activities involving staff, patient and s
  • Apart from general instructions, MSW’s are given specific roles and responsibilities according to the needs of the departments posted by the Social Service Officer with the approval of the Faculty in-charge.
