The average daily attendance of patients to Emergency Department varies between 300-350 cases. For proper categorization of patients according to Emergency Severity Index (ESI), triage of all cases attending the casualty was started in the month of July 2013. The team of Doctors and Nurses are involved in Triaging, Resuscitating, evaluating all patients attending the Emergency. Various procedures like chest tube insertion, Splinting, Haemorrhage control, Fluid resuscitation, Central venous catheter insertion, Airway management and Intubation are done as and when indicated during resuscitation. After stabilisation and initial documentation procedures are completed; necessary imaging or laboratory investigations are done. Specialist consultations are taken from various departments like Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Urology, etc.

The Emergency ICU has 12 beds with 11 ventilators and sick cases are admitted and managed here initially. Patients in this ICU are managed during the initial hours by the Residents and staff from the Department of Emergency Medicine and Trauma, Residents from the Respective Departments and the dedicated ICU Nursing staff.

Short stay medical patients are admitted in 1st floor for continuation of treatment; beds totalling to 60 Nos. including both male & female separately. Emergency OT, Post-operative Ward & CCCU are located in the 2nd floor of EMS Block. The Emergency OT is equipped with 3 OT tables and averages of 400 operations a month, functioning round the clock. The 3rd floor consists of Trauma-OT, Trauma-ICU and Critical Care Unit. The 4th floor has 60 beds and designated as Trauma-ward for Trauma and Surgical patients. The 5th floor has Burns ward, Burns-OT and Burns-ICU and is managed Plastic Surgeons.

The conceptual model of ED triage was started since July 2013, using Emergency Severity Index (ESI). The medical team consists of Doctors, Nurses assisted by Trauma Technicians, Student Nurses, Dressers, Nursing Attendants, and other ancillary hospital staffs. In order to cater to the emergency referral services, the department is provided with 2 ambulances equipped with life support systems.
